About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

Customer Review :

Well-constructed and great value : Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Bench Series 3.1

My biggest question when buying a bench or any piece of exercise equipment is, "Will it be big enough for me?" At 6-3 255, this can be a problem. Seems exercise companies these days think only small people work out!

I bought this along with the 552 dumbbells and stand. I found that this bench, just like the stand was much easier to assemble than some reviews say. The only part I had trouble with was putting the seat on, which can be explained by my body size. I'm sure there is a better way to do it, but I just picked it up and sat it on a table and put the seat on that way, instead of laying in the floor, cursing the little guy that decided to make this seat require me being under it to install the seat.

Trust me, that is part of the fun!

All of the instructions were clear, and it really wasn't that much that needed to be assembled. The parts as packaged, the seat, the back rest pad, the front stabilizer, the rear stabilizer and the rest was assembled. Well except the leg hold downs, which only requires sliding a pin and bar through a hole and putting the pads on each side.

You bolt the main part to the rear stabilizer, then the front stabilizer, bolt the back pad and seat on and that is it.

For a few measurements, and why I am more than impressed with this bench.

The seat at its widest point is 15 inches wide, at the front (under your thighs in incline) and 12 inches wide at its most narrow point. The back rest is also 12 inches wide. The back rest is nearly 3 inches thick and the seat is a little over 3 inches thick.

The material used in the frame is very sturdy. It says 300 pound user with 300 pounds of weights, can be supported and I believe it. The construction and design itself is excellent.

What I did was pull the stand in front of the leg end of the bench. It is narrow enough to fit that way, with the stand and dumbbells right in front of you when you sit down.

The incline is also very easy to use. You just slide the bar (that you can see in the picture) it has wheels on the bar and each setting has a gate/wall that the wheels stop at. That is it. No more pulling pins out, turning hex wrenches, or anything like that.

Mainly what I am saying is that I am an old school lifter that is used to narrow benches that require work to adjust during the workouts, this bench takes all of that extra work out of it and it looks nice as well.

Looks aren't a big deal, but trying to convince my wife that I really need this bench in the garage, near her artwork, made the looks matter!

I also have reviews of the stand and dumbbells up, so check those out too. I'm very pleased with all 3 and recommend each of them as highly as possible.

Tips for the Dbs : Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell (Single)

I'm a certified personal trainer, I've been lifting commonly for nearly a decade and after 3 months with my Selectech 1090 dumbbells I can tell you with absolute certainty they are the best buy I've ever made to get a stronger, more muscular body.

First off let me tell you why I decided to get them since my motivations will help interpret their benefits:

Already knowledgeable on lifting - Like I said, I'm a certified personal teacher and I already know how to do tons of exercises with proper form. If I had no idea how to do strength training, these dumbbells would be pretty intimidating, and I'd probably want to get a home gym motor to guide me straight through the proper motions.

180 is Just Right - For someone light the 1050's that are 50 pounds would probably be adequate resistance. By the same token, if your a 250 pound lineman on your division 1 College football team, or a power lifter these weights will be inadequate for you. 180 pounds is adequate resistance for most people, but if your an elite athlete in a high weight class these just aren't going to cut it long term. You should go with a full olympic weight set.

I weigh about 180 pounds, so I form If I can bench, row, squat and deadlift the dumbbells which are equivalent to my body weight for 10 reps I'm strong adequate and don't need to worry about getting bigger. I think most habitancy feel that way and these will fit the needs of the vast majority of users.

Workout By Myself - If you have a spotter to help you adjust weights, or spot you from dropping a heavy bar on your throat then barbell sets are a itsybitsy more bright but since I work out by myself, speedily adjusted weights and dumbells that I can let go of without decapitating myself are very appealing.

Limited Space - I didn't want to fill a room with a whole gym or weight set. These take up virtually no space in the corner of a room.

Good speculation - Buying all the dumbbells you'd need to have 0-90 would cost well over a thousand dollars, these are an anticipated deal given the flexibility they give you.

Glutton for punishment - I love doing drop sets where after I reach muscular failure with a weight, I speedily cut the weight squeeze out a few more reps and continue on like that until I pass out, throw up or get stronger. Changing weights with the turn of a dial could not be faster or more convenient. I like to keep my workouts pretty intense and short, not having to waste time or focus fiddling with dropping and adding weight helps me get a great intense workout more quickly.

Too Lazy and Cheap for Gyms - I'm one of those freak shows that unquestionably unquestionably enjoy working out, but I'm way too lazy too commute to the gym, and too cheap to pay for membership. Plus I get hot and I'd rather workout with my shirt off which would be weird at a collective gym. I have an easier time production sure I get my workouts in when I can just pick up and do it whenever I feel like it without going out of my way. I'd been doing body weight exercises like pushups and squats for a while and I was happy with it, but I wanted to throw something new at my body and increase the intensity of my workouts. These give me all the convenience and flexibility of a home gym, without having to give up an unreasonable estimate of space or money.

Dumbbells Rule! - Dumbbells are great than machines or barbells for real world strength. Not only do they build your stabilizing muscles and core better, but they get both sides of your body strength symmetrical, unlike machines or barbells where the stronger side can pick up the slack from the weaker side. If someone can bench 100 they won't be able to dumbbell press that much, where as someone who can dumbbell press 100 will be able to bench much more!

Love Bodyweight Exercises: I believe the body responds great to bodyweight exercises like dips, chinups and squats than equivalent exercises that don't move the body straight through space like motor leg presses or lat pull downs. So I'd unquestionably rather use dip/chinup tower with added resistance from the dumbbells on a dipping belt rather than, use equivalent exercises on a machine.

More on this, and a full record of the goods features:

Highly Recommended with a Dip/Chinup Tower and Lifting Belt!
Professionally, I sell breakdancing competition and instructional videos like this:
International Battle of the Year 2008 and Storm's Footwork Fundamentals, I've been break dancing for years and triceps are the most often used muscles for handstands, and power moves like flares and headspins. Dips are my favorite tricep developer, and I've been doing them for years, long adequate that I was ready for some added resistance beyond my own body weight.

I'd tried filling a camping backpack with dumbbells, but it was very uncomfortable (The steel weights dug into my back), it was difficult to put on, it made me back heavy so I felt like I'd fall backwards and be like a turtle on it's shell unable to get up, and it would be incredibly time bright to adjust the weight, I'd have to take off the backpack and gradually add or remove weight, zip it up and put it back on, it would take any minutes, and be a disruptive hassle. I have a dip and chinup tower and when I got the 1090's I started out doing dips and chinups holding the handle in the middle of my feet. That worked okay, but it's hard to incorporate on holding it with your legs while the lift, and because the dumbells are so long, if your dip/chinup tower isn't highly high, if you go the whole way down holding the weight in the middle of your feet you'll smash your dumbbell on the ground.

So I invested in this 20 dollar dipping belt from amazon Altus Athletic Nylon Dip Belt It works great and is highly comfortable, the only thing I didn't like is the chain just seals around the dumbbell handle with a hook, and I wanted something more secure, so I got a 2 dollar itsybitsy speed carabiner from home depot that securely fastens the dipping belt chain shut around the dumbbell handle and holds it securely. So I'd propose if you want to do dips and chin-ups you get a dipping belt and carabinier, they are cheap, and convert it from being a chore to being a pleasure. With the help of my dipping belt and the 1090's, in the past 3 months I've worked up to doing 12 dips with 60 pounds, and 5 chinups with 60 pounds. My friends jaws drop when they see me banging out reps while hauling the extra weight. I plan on working up to performing chin ups and dips with the added weight of the full 90 pound dumbbell.

The Dials: It's incredibly fast and easy to elect your weight. The dials are sturdy, clearly labeled, fast, accurate, and allow for dissimilar settings on each side of a particular barbell, so if you want to curl 32.5 pounds, you just set one side at 30, the other at 35 and your good to go. Very occasionally (maybe 1 out of 100 times) if I don't put the dumbbells back down into their owner properly the dial will lock up slightly. But if I reseat the dumbbells properly, or knock the dial down to 0 and put the handle pack in it's place it's back and good as new. Note that if you always put the handle in perfectly this won't happen, but you will probably occasionally set the handle back down into the dumbbells at an off angle, either you have the stand or not.

The Dumbbell Stand: Get it. I didn't think I'd need it, but these bad boys are unquestionably heavy and tough to move around without the stand. The stand is pretty easy to put together, looks cool, it's space efficient, sturdy secure, and super easy to move around on it's wheeled base, so you can bring the weights out of the way, or over to your bench, and save the energy you would have used wrestling them up from the ground to instead set a new personal best on your lifts! The stand makes these much more suitable and more of a delight to use.

The Bar (Gloves not included):
I have medium to large hands and for me the round-rectangular shape of the handles are perfectly comfortable, I don't mind them not being round. With that being said the metal on the handles is Very textured to give a great grip. For light lifts of 10-40 pounds this feels okay on bare skin, but when you start doing lifts with the full 90 pounds and you have soft hands these will Rip you up. This doesn't bother me any, I always lift with workout gloves and with those they couldn't be more comfortable. If your hands are crazy tough or you don't commonly lift heavy don't sweat it, but if you lift heavy and you like having skin on your palms, you need gloves for these handles.

The Dumbbell Size: The dumbbells are a itsybitsy long compared to acceptable ones. I never find them difficult to use or troublesome, but they are a good 6 inches longer then acceptable dumbbells just so you know.

Okay, that's about as acceptable a quote as I can give. Sorry it's long but I figured you'd want to get all the details before you shell out $500+ They're well made and as long as you don't abuse them and throw them around the room they should last you for decades of quarterly use. I could not perhaps be happier with these or propose them more highly. If the benefits that appealed to me, motion to you pick these up. You'll be glad you did.

  • Dimensions: 90 inches long by 38 inches wide by 83 inches tall
  • Folded Footprint: 52 inches long by 38 inches wide
  • Workout Area: 8 feet, 4 inches by 6 feet, 6 inches

Multiple Machines in One Device
The Blaze home gym is similar to having a whole resistance training gym tucked right into your den. Bowflex's lat tower with angled lat bar helps build back and shoulder muscles quickly, and the lower pulley/squat station enables you to do squats and build your glutes, hamstrings and quads. In addition, the Blaze is equipped with a leg extension/leg curl attachment that helps develop strong, muscular legs, and the sliding seat rail allows you to perform aerobic rowing and leg presses to improve your cardiovascular health. And instead of different handles for every exercise, Bowflex has designed triple-function handgrips and ankle cuffs with multiple cable/pulley positions that encourage custom workouts. But if custom workouts isn't your cup of tea, Bowflex also includes a workout placard that steps you through the famous Bowflex 20-minute workout.

Power Rod Technology
Bowflex Power Rods give you resistance, or weight, that feels as good as or better than free weight lifting -- but without the inertia or risk of joint pain that is almost always associated with free weight strength training. Power Rod units are precisely manufactured under the highest quality control measures, then sheathed and tested four separate times to ensure quality and durability. Bowflex is convinced that the Power Rod units are so strong that you simply can't wear them out. You can flex them repeatedly, but they won't lose their resistance or break. In fact, they're so strong, Bowflex has given the Power Rods a no-time-limit warranty. If you can wear the Power Rods out, Bowflex will replace them for free.

The Key to a Better Body
strength training is when you perform exercises with resistance to build muscle strength. Strength training is not running on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, or using a ski or rider machine. Although these types of aerobic machines use "resistance" to increase cardiovascular workout intensity, it is still not the same as strength training. strength training is, essentially, weight lifting. But don't be discouraged; you don't have to get bulky muscles if you don't want to. With Bowflex Blaze you can shape and sculpt your muscles to make your body look the way you want. It just takes persistence and dedication.

Why does strength training work better than aerobics for getting fit and losing fat? Because the more muscles you have on your body, the higher your metabolism rate, and the more calories you burn. Muscle also creates the shape of your body -- muscle is what makes you move, it's what gives you energy and strength. Of course, this doesn't mean you should abandon your aerobic exercise -- cardiovascular exercise is necessary for a healthy body -- but the combination of aerobic and strength training will help you achieve your fitness goals. Muscle acts as your body's fat burners. It's the stuff that makes you active and makes you burn calories. If you want to lose fat, you need to strength train with the Bowflex Blaze to add muscles, burn calories, and look fantastic.

What's in the Box?
Bowflex Blaze home gym, lat bar, leg extension/leg curl attachments, triple-function handgrips and ankle cuffs, 20-minute workout placard, and owner's manual/fitness guide.

Manufacturer's Warranty
Five-year limited warranty on commercial quality construction and lifetime warranty on Power Rods

Customer Review :

Bowflex Blaze, an perfect choice : Bowflex Blaze Home Gym

Pros -

1. You get to workout in the privacy and convenience of your home without having to lug free weights around, and/or without having to store a heavy estimate of dumbbells.

2. It is Much safer than free weights in that you can achieve heavy lifting routines without needing a spotter. Ever think you can do one more rep of a heavy bench press on free weights just to realize "oops" you can't? It's not fun rolling that heavy bar off of your chest. For the most part you don't have to worry about injuries with the Bowflex.

3. This ties into #1 but you don't have to go to the gym. The time you spend packing your bag, driving to the gym, changing, getting to the machines (maybe they're open, maybe they're not), showering, getting dressed, and driving home, you can do at home with the Bowflex in probably half the time, or less.

4. There's something about it that makes it practically fun to use. You want to use it. Gym machines and free weights just don't have that same motivating effect.

5. If used properly you Will see great results. I had an older model (Power Pro) a few years ago and used it religiously for heavy routines. Citizen I didn't know (like at the checkout counter) would make comments about how I look like I like to lift heavy things.

6. Free weights ordinarily need to be performed with a precise motion. Deviate from that petition and you just might pull a muscle, tendon, or worse. Bowflex gives you greater leisure to tweak the motions you use to better suit your body type, flexibility, etc.

7. You can quickly switch from one disposition to a fully unrelated disposition (like going from shoulders to legs) all in the same place. The speed at which you can adjust resistance and muscle groups being worked is unbeatable by any other method/machine.

8. It is a high potential piece of equipment, all the way down to the nuts and bolts. You'd have to tip this thing over and run it over with a tank to wreck it. After several years of hard use, the only things you might have to replace are the rods, hand grips, and cables. The rods are free for life, the hand grips and cables are covered for 5 years and after that are cheap (if not free depending on how your conversation goes with the buyer aid rep).

9. Oodles better and oodles economy than the Xtreme models. Having the long bench is Soooo much better than the upright chair and shorter rods on the Xtreme models. I used to have one that was fully loaded (got it for free) but reverted back to the Power Pro (which had the long bench like the Blaze).

10. You get to work so many parts of your body (60+ exercises) on one machine. Many dissimilar machines advertise this feature, but only the Bowflex delivers on this.

11. If used properly and creatively enough, you can probably ditch your cardio disposition unless you're already a hardcore jogger/runner.

Cons -

1. As has been stated by countless Citizen before, the resistance ratings are overly generous. That's why I put "lbs" in quotations for the remainder of this review. Performing a disposition with any given "weight" on the Bowflex is noticeably lighter than free weights. But if this is your only piece of muscle workout equipment, it doesn't as a matter of fact matter. Just know that if you can deadlift "200" lbs for example, that doesn't mean you can pick up a box that as a matter of fact weighs 200lbs. But for most Citizen it would be impossible to max out the motor for all but bench press and leg workouts. So this as a matter of fact isn't that considerable of a con.

2. The 200 "lbs" it comes with won't be sufficient for legs workouts or bench pressing. At least not for long unless you're man that has dinky muscle mass and plans to stay that way, in which case you should just buy a Motivator 2 for $600. For the rest of us that want to gain some good muscle mass, you will have to buy the two $99/each upgrades to get to 400 "lbs". Once you factor those upgrades in, this motor is not such a great bargain anymore, but still much economy than the more expensive, yet inferior, Xtreme models.

3. The leg press basically cannot be done. The strap that goes nearby your back Digs in to the point of pain, unless you're using such a low weight that you're not even giving your legs a workout anyway. An easy alternative would simply be to do squats or lunges away from the motor using only your body weight until that gets too easy. Then buy one pair of cheap dumbbells and go from there. But I might try putting a throw pillow in the middle of my back and the strap next time.

4. The 400 "lb" upgrade places the two rods behind the 5 "lb" rods instead of next to the other 2 50 "lb" rods. This gives a dissimilar feel to those distant 50 "lb" rods than the two that are next to each other. I wish Bowflex would have put all 3 pairs of 50's next to each other. It's not a huge deal though.

5. Unlike the old Power Pro, the flat bench cannot be pushed flat against the vertical bar for a good troops press. Instead the shoulder raises are done at an angle. I miss being able to do shoulder raises right up and down.

Other Thoughts -

Unless you're already very well versed in workout routines, I highly recommend the Bowflex iTrainer software. You have to buy it from Bowflex but it is so cool in that it plans your daily routines for you (you can edit them though) and provides small looping videos of how to do each exercise (instead of finding at a static picture). Get the iTrainer.

I bought mine directly from Amazon for $800, as well as both the 300 and 400 lb upgrades for a total of $1000. A day or so later the price of the motor only (with 200 "lbs") went up to 830, and as of now is 900 from Amazon partners. This is a decent motor but is overpriced at 900 or even 850 when you factor in the need to buy the additional rods. If you're unavoidable that you'll never need the additional rods (but most men will, and some women will too), then you might as well buy the Motivator 2 for $600. The Blaze offers a few more things but the two are very similar.

Customer Review :

Bowflex SelectTech Stand will give you a hell of a fight. Bring Ice. : Bowflex SelectTech 552 / 1090 Dumbbell Stand

I admit it, my biggest presume for having concern about buying this stand, was the concern of putting it together. Not that I have trouble in general, putting thing together, but because I had a lot of reviews, not just here, but on a few sports store websites as well, that said the instructions are horrible and that this stand is very hard to put together.

I'm not for sure if they are now putting new instructions in with this stand, or if people just don't pay concentration when putting something together. For whatever implicated about the stand's assembly, here is what came in the package.

3 distinct sized bolts, 1 size of flathead bolts/screws, each with the nut attached and 4 stacks of washers that work with any of the bolts.

That is it. What I did, I opened the blister pack of hardware and put each type of bolt together. That took about 1 minute, finding that you can lay the 3 types of bolts beside each other and tell the incompatibility in the longer ones.

Once I did this, one step uses the biggest bolts, all of them. One step uses the medium sized bolts, all of them and one step uses the smallest bolts, all of them. It is that simple. Even better, the instructions and order of assembly starts with the biggest bolts, then medium, then smallest. There is no way to screw that up since the smaller bolts are not long adequate to fit the steps requiring the bigger ones.

The one thing I will note is though the allen key is included, be sure to have a pair of small vice-grips or 7/16 socket/adjustable wrench, to hold the nut in place while tightening the bolt.

The only part I found to be the least bit hard was putting the towel stand in. As we start working against gravity and not having adequate hands, on this part. I had no idea there is a towel stand, it is the last step, and requires retention a curved bar under the dumbbell holders, while inserting 4 flat head bolts. Still, after a few times of dropping the bolts, you will get it right.

The stand isn't exactly like that one pictured. The one pictured has more of satin silver color to it, but this one has more of a matte gray color, darker colored. Not a big deal, as it undoubtedly works nicely for what it is supposed to do.

Total time of assembly 45 minutes, included removing all from box. Just corollary those directions and you won't have a bit of problems. One last note, it does comprise straps to hold the dumbbells down, so if you buy the dumbbells too, don't worry about cutting the shipping restraints, that look just like the straps in the pictures I've seen with the dumbbells on the stand.

Great stock so far.

Bowflex PR3000 Home Gym SpecificationsThe Bowflex PR3000 home gym is a great way to strengthen your muscles with over 50 strength exercises and a built-in rowing station. With up to 210 pounds of Power Rod resistance (can be upgraded to 310 pounds), this versatile machine helps work the abs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, and lower body. It includes a no-change cable pulley system, vertical bench press, triple-function hand grips for lat pull-down, and four-inch upholstered roller cushions for leg extension and leg curl exercises.

The PR3000 utilizes Bowflex's patented Power Rods, which provide resistance, or weight, that feels as good as or better than free weights--but without the inertia or risk of joint pain usually associated with free weights. You can hook one, two, three, four or all of your Power Rod units to the cable pulley system and go from as little as 5 pounds all the way up to 210 pounds of resistance.

They're precisely manufactured from a high-tech composite material under the highest quality control measures, then sheathed and tested 4 separate times to ensure quality and durability. The Power Rod units are so strong, you can flex them repeatedly but you won't be able to wear them out.

Nice for the Price : Bowflex PR3000 Home Gym

After using this Bowflex gym for a few months on a quarterly basis, the 30 lb rod snapped/shattered. And this was done by a woman who is a senior. I've attempted to have it supplanted but with No luck. I called Bowflex as well as emailed in the receipt twice with a message...all to no avail. The gym is now collecting dust. Based on their inability to back up their guarantee, I don't propose this gym.
